Sports Dentistry in Indianapolis, IN - Holland Dental

Dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury sustained during participation in sports. Victims of sports related dental injuries may face a lifetime of dental costs, hours in the dentist's chair and the possible development of further problems if the issue is not addressed properly. Sports related dental injuries, and dental emergencies in general, can pose as a great challenge to dental offices that are not prepared to take immediate and effective action.

Dr. Holland learned about sports related dental injuries the hard way when his two front tooth broke his fall during a high school basketball game. This was his introduction to emergency dental care, and where he still draws his passion to advance his knowledge on the topic. We hope you never have a sports related injury, but if you do, we will be ready to take care of you.

Mouth Guards

Accidents happen, but there are ways to prevent sports related dental injuries. The American Dental Association estimates that mouth guards prevent approximately 200,000 injuries each year in high school and collegiate football alone. A properly fitted mouth guard must be protective, comfortable, resilient, and most importantly, must stay in! There are three common types of mouth guards. These are:

Stock - Inexpensive and come pre-formed, ready to wear. Unfortunately, they often don't fit very well. They can be bulky and can make breathing and talking difficult.

Boil and bite - Can be bought at many sporting goods stores and may offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. They should be softened in water, then inserted and allowed to adapt to the shape of your mouth. If you don't follow the directions carefully you can wind up with a poor-fitting mouth protector.

Custom-fitted - Made by your dentist for you personally. These mouthguards are custom fit, providing improved retention and protection. Current research also suggests a significant reduction in concussions and alveolar/tooth fracture.
